Coracle Press Gallery - Exhibitions

EXHIBITIONS AND EVENTS 1976-1980

A complete list is in the 4 Years at Coracle Press catalogue.

I have picked out a few exhibitions and events that stand out in my memory.

The first exhibition at Coracle Press Gallery was by Richard Wilson

April 3rd to May 1st 1976.

It was sculpture made of wood & twine titled ELEVEN PIECES

The cards were printed on the butterfly circular press now installed in the basement of 233 Camberwell New Road.

Delicate pieces which used the tension between the wire, twine and wood to remain in situ. (Our cat delighted in jumping up to ping a piece apart).

Richard Wilson also had a second Exhibition at Coracle Press Gallery from

January 6th to 31st in 1980.

This was titled TWELVE PIECES

Mick Williamson, who I worked with at the Sir John Cass School of Art Photographic Department, photographed the pieces & a catalogue was published. This again used the printers Edward Wells, at 143 Camberwell New Road, where the typesetter, Terry Cook, became our technician extraordinaire.

Kay Roberts: A View Over the Skirting Board, installed

October 2nd to November 5th 1976.

I had an installation piece in mind using motifs from clouds & spitfire airplanes, using their resemblance to the plaster flying birds that were placed, 3 birds on living room walls. I also constructed a mirror in the shape of the clouds that were painted, to be used as a reflection of a plane on the opposite wall. The planes were made of sawn quite thick sectioned oak & then painted with humbrol paint, the colours of both camouflage & a ‘flying duck’.

This work was bought by David Brown and installed in his house in
Killyon Road, Clapham.

When David Brown died in May 2002 his books were donated to UEA library & a frontis piece of View was used for each book.

The first group show was of small works by invited artists, the domestic scale being part of the ethos of Coracle.

I often did the photographs of the exhibitions & this one of the Lazy Sculpture by Dave Roe shows how he played on the walls of Coracle being tongue and groove.

The artists shown at Coracle Press Gallery were also some of the people Simon Cutts knew from Nottingham Trent Art School, Including Martin Fidler, who had two exhibitions of paintings: 18 June – 16 July 1977 & 5 May – 2 June 1979.

TONY HAYWARD

While Simon Cutts was in Australia, I was responsible for the exhibition of Tony Hayward’s work

As ever Kart Simmons helped with the day to day elements for the exhibition.

It was the last exhibition or event I was involved in at Coracle.
