neca : new exhibitions of contemporary art
I began publishing new exhibitions of contemporary art in May June 1978 on the suggestion of Nicolas Logsdail of Lisson Gallery. At the time Cork Street was the main gallery street & those of us running galleries outside the main stream needed a way of encouraging people to visit our exhibitions.
The first issue was in letterpress, listed 24 galleries & had a print run of 2,000. Each gallery received 100 copies to be free to be picked up.
The map was drawn from the A-Z in a crude way & was to show how to get from gallery to gallery for visitors.
From 1984 it was printed in litho, in 1998 it had a web site & now has a searchable database.
